Bud poured water into the percolator coffee pot, then waited for the coffee to brew, all the time expecting a call from Howie.

It wasn’t every day one got a call from the Air Force Coordination Rescue Center, and when one did, it usually triggered a search and rescue, or SAR, effort, which typically meant going out to some remote area, which included most of Emery County. The Air Force Coordination Rescue Center was the central receiving center for SAR requests beamed off satellites, and these always came from people with PLBs.

Bud wondered who had triggered the PLB and why. And he wondered if he would be needed to help, as he still served with the local SAR unit, such that it was, usually just him and a couple of EMTs, with the official unit being based in Radium, an hour’s drive away.

He put a dollop of vanilla-bean ice cream into his coffee, then went outside and wandered around the yard a bit, the dogs following at his heels. He turned on the sprinkler under the apple tree, pulled a few weeds, uprighted the tipped-over wheelbarrow, then went back inside.

He was almost ready to call Howie, but instead fiddled with his pipe, deciding to go on out to the farm. If Howie needed him, he would call—nothing had ever stopped him from calling before, no matter how inopportune the time.

Bud checked out the cookie jar, which was empty, then looked in the fridge, where he struck paydirt—a container of what looked like malted-chocolate cupcakes. It looked like Wilma Jean was on a cupcake-making binge, which was fine by him.

Bud was guessing these were malted-chocolate cupcakes because of the color—they weren’t as dark as real chocolate ones would be. The frosting was all swirled on like when one uses one of those frosting baggie things—he’d seen one the time Wilma Jean had dragged him into the gourmet cooking shop over in Grand Junction—and the cupcake had tiny white sugar stars sprinkled all over everything. It looked like something out of a fancy cupcake shop, and Bud almost felt guilty taking it.

He was beginning to feel like a foodie, a gourmand, given the gourmet cupcakes Wilma Jean had been bringing home lately, as well as the gourmet cheeseburger and soup he’d had at the Silver Spur Cafe. He was also beginning to wonder if he might just lose his taste for normal good cooking if this continued.

Maybe he should back off, he thought—but only after this one cupcake. He put it into a plastic sandwich bag and stuffed it into his shirt pocket. He knew he had just smashed it, but he also knew it would taste the same.

Bud now went outside, lifting Pierre and Hoppie into the FJ, then headed out for Krider’s Melon Farm. Professor Krider was still down in Texas visiting family and wasn’t scheduled to return for several weeks. There wasn’t much to do on the farm, but Bud wanted to go check things out and make sure the weeds weren’t taking over.
